A pharmaceutical known by the brand name Klonopin (Clonazepam) is a member of the benzodiazepine pharmacological class. It functions by amplifying the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a particular neurotransmitter in the brain. GABA promotes relaxation and lowers anxiety by calming the central nervous system. Although the FDA has not approved Klonopin for the treatment of sleep disorders, it is occasionally prescribed off-label for the treatment of insomnia.
