Pterygoid Process

The pterygoid process is a bony structure located in the skull, specifically within the sphenoid bone. It consists of two parts: the lateral and medial pterygoid plates. These structures serve as attachment sites for muscles involved in chewing (mastication) and jaw movement. The lateral pterygoid plate contributes to the formation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), while the medial pterygoid plate provides support to the muscles of the soft palate. Together, they play a crucial role in the functioning of the jaw and surrounding structures, facilitating movements essential for activities like eating, speaking, and swallowing.
